Since the other thread for him got fudged, I wanted to put something up.
Anyway, Kirby, I just got the news down in MAss that you did it man. Im really proud of you and have been following you the whole way in the shelter logs and your posts on this and other sites. Way to go buddy. We are in Mass still pushing North and should be in Maine before too long. Then again, what is the hurry!

serious sucsess story here. this was a young hiker. this will set the pace and tune for his wonderful lifetime of hikeing he has ahead of him. kirby is a good man. im so proude that me and jack and goat and dude are his masters. he is truly a fellow jedi now. we will continue to operate the kirby unit as long as the project is viable. kirby won our hearts and has respect and is better than me. i will now report to the nearst decinagration chamber. my body will be fed to the converter to help make the journey. four time looser out.
... four time looser out.
Getting off the Trail just gives you an excuse to go out there again...
I've been away from WB for a bit and just found this thread, thanks everyone. I'll be climbing Katahdin again sometime in September, maybe around the time of the End of Trails Festival, not sure though.
Reality is harsh, I think about the trail every single day. I still have the urge to be hiking. On some level I feel lost now, the white blazes were my assurance that I was going the right way, and now those are gone.

I think that nearly everyone who completes a thru-hike feels this way for a while. It will take time to sort every thing out and make sense of what to do next. Of course, in your case that should be easier than most. So when does school start back?!;):D

It's not too bad, you have the blue and yellow blazes to pick from too.
Yes, reality is harsh.
Amen. There are a whole lot of adventures of all kinds waiting ahead.
Have fun finding them!
Not sure what's harsh about that, though.

I look forward to meeting you at the Gathering in the fall, it should be quite the conversation.

And I look forward to hearing that conversation, it should make for a good story.

I recognized you the moment I saw you, it was a flashback to the work we did in NH during Trashgiving.
The good ol' days.

Hey, Kirby, would've written earlier but I've been on the road and away from computers. Anyway, congratulations from Salina, Kansas (don't ask!). I never had any doubt you'd do fine on the Trail, and of course you proved me right, as I expected. Nice work, see you soon!

Is 5 years an acceptable time to "sort things out an make sense of what to do next"? :)

I actually figured it out. See every time you hike, you subtract that time from the "sort things out thing" which inturn buys you more time. Its easy keep walkin.
Now, I like that analogy. Makes perfectly good sense to me!!!
Kirby, why the hatred for the Long Trail?

Because I had a horrible experience while there.

I hated the Carter Moriah range of the Whites. And the Stecoahs of NC. I hope to return and pay homage, esp to the Carter range where I almost hurled my backpack over the edge. :)
What doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger. Or so they say. :D
I'm thinking about hiking Crawford Notch to Pinkham Notch again in September, if I can find someone willing to take me.

Don't you have to go back to school in September Kirby? It may help your feelings of disorientation and loss to get back to school, spend time with friends, get involved in the community, and focus on studies. It may give you some direction.
