View Full Version : Getting around Maine
Now that I've taken (and hopefully passed) the Texas Bar Exam, I have finalized plans to go back to the woods where no one will care. I am planning on going from Hanover, NH up to Andover, ME. The only issue I have is getting around once I get to Andover.
There isn't a greyhound station anywhere near there. Is there any public transportation I would have access to? Barring that, how about riding the thumb? Is it easy to hitchhike in Maine? Is it legal? How far to a train station/bus station? If you were in Andover without a car, what would you do? Perhaps I should stop earlier or go longer?
Read up on hitching in Maine (http://www.digihitch.com/usa-state-22.html)
Lewiston is probably closest bus terminal to Andover.
Should be able to catch a shuttle from Andover to RT2 where traffic is heavy to Rumford.. From Rumford head south to Lewiston. If you look reasonably decent, you should be able to hitch.

I lived in Maine back in 1990 and saw many people hitchiking.
My sister and her family live there now and i go visit every year.
I still see hitchikers.
I think Mainers would be more apt to pick you up then folks from more populated states. (CO and MT are also states where i see more hitchikers)
Ive done a bit of hitching from hiking and almost always have gotten a ride. If people see your wearing a hiking pack and not carrying a duffle bag or the like, you'll be more apt to get a ride. I was sectioning the AT near Andover once with my dog. Well, he thought it would be a good idea to go after a rabbit through the woods. Well when he finally came out 5 minutes later, his dog pack was gone. I searched for a long time and needless to say, it was gone! So I had to get to Andover and return my dog home because all his food was in the pack. Well not only did I get a ride in about 20 minutes of thumbing, but he gave me $ and bought me lunch in town!!
It really made my day to meet a nice man willing to give a smelly hiker and his wet dog a long ride into town. Especially after being angry at my dog for the major inconvenience he caused...Good luck on your journey! Hope you get good weather through the Whites(not many people do).
You could also consider ending your trip in Gorham, shuttle down to Pinkham Notch and catch a bus from there to I think Boston. From there you should be able to get back to Texas. Just a thought...
