I have one, I've only used it a few times. It uses DL123 lithium batteries which have a ten year shelf life. I'd had it for a while ( a year or so) and took it on a hike in near drought conditions. I had to use standing water a couple of times. I didn't get sick. At the end of the hike though the batteries died. I've read elsewhere that the batteries are supposed to be long lived, maybe I had some bad ones. I may have gotten them from my army days and I don't know how old they were. The system produces chlorine dioxide, just like katadyn tablets which are much lighter of course. I see it's niche as a backup for a filter, maybe not for hiking but for general camping/paddling etc. With an MSR filter, a couple of prefilters, and a MIOX (with extra batts) you could live off of stagnant pond water if you had too.
