View Full Version : CT/NY border
I am planing a 2+ week section and would like to start as close as possible to the NY/CT border, then hike N.
Does the AT cross the border on Hoyt Rd in CT or NY and would the trail be recognizable from a car on the road? Or would it be easier to jump on at Rte 55 ?
Thanks,
Mike

It crosses at Hoyt Road. New York on one side and CT on the other. It's easily recognizable because Hoyt Rd is short and narrow, so not much going on, plus there's a small (maybe 3 car) dirt pull-off and AT signs visible on both sides (or at least on the CT side. It's just a short walk from there to Rte 55, but why not start right at the border?
I kind of wanted to start at or as close to the border as possible and see how far I can get within reason. I guess anyplace is as good as the next but for some reason the border seemed appropriate.
The other option was to get on as close to HWY 84 as possible since the ride I ma getting is heading down 84 anyway.

I would really not suggest leaving any car at Hoyt if you were planning that as I had mine broken into there last year and I was only gone about 45 min. Depending on when you are going let me know I am only about 10 min from this area and can give you a ride from where your ride on 84 drops you off to where ever you want to start on the trail in this region. just shoot me a PM if you want.

ditto what sasquatch said, i would not feel comfortable leaving my car on Hoyt Rd...
My brother is makng a trip from RI to OH so he is going to drop me off on the way. Sasquatch. About how far a drive is Hoyt Rd from 84?
Plan on 30 minutes from I-84 to Hoyt Rd depending on when/where you are coming from I-84 (multiple start points and rush hour considerations)

I am planning to do this section soon myself and was planning to park one car near Fisher pond at the northern end of the CT section and self-shuttle back to Hoyt road. Two questions-
does anyone have concern with leaving a vehicle at the parking area near Fisher Pond?
Is there somewhere else, near the hoyt road where a vehicle could be left and from which we could hike back to the hoyt road start?
Thanks,

The parking area on RT 55 is a very short distance from Hoyt Rd. RT 55 is more heavily traveled than Hoyt, so it could be safer.
Parking can be dicey at any spot. That said I have never had a problem from NY thru VT and parts of NH. Risk probably depends on car make/model and making it look empty with glove box empty and open.

After my car was broken into last year someone gave good point. The week before don't clean out the car at all. I live in mine with all the driving that I do and the two kids so at the end of a week all the accumulated trash keeps most people from thinking that there is anything of worth in such a pig stye of a car.
I too am doing the CT section next week, anyone know of the safest place to park at the northern end of CT part? I would rather go into mass so as to complete the CT section rather than park in CT and backtrack. I am getting shuttled to the start so that aint a concern.

The parking area for Bear Mountain on rt 41 seems decent also the Parking area just north of salisbury ct. on rt 41 is a good spot - Never had any issues with either.

There is an sign at this parking area posted by the local PD saying break-ins here are a regular occurrence, but I ignored it and did not have an issue the two times I left a car here.
