I have the Thru-hiker's companion, it's an older version (2006- I plan on getting a new one) On some places in the charts, there's the shelter name and right underneath the name it'll have like 10mS; 6.8mN. I've looked in the front of the book, and I can't figure out what it means. Am I missing something? I would assume it's the number of miles north or south but from what? the numbers aren't the same, so that doesnt make sense. Help, I am leaving for a 3 day trip tomorrow.

10 miles South to the next shelter
6.8 miles North to the next shelter

A lot of things will become much clearer when you are out hiking. And a lot of the things you're worrying about now will turn out not to be problems at all.

Enjoy yourself and have a great hike!
