I just recently hiked the colbert Ridge Trail in the Black Mountains of North Carolina. This is a very challenging hike (3.8 miles uphill to Deep Gap) but the scenery and sense of accomplishment make it worthwhile. Unfortunately there was no water, the springs were all dry so one needs to be prepared for this. The Black Mountains range is a very challenging and rewarding place to hike, just make sure you bring your map and compass as the trails are less well marked once you leave the state park.
