View Full Version : anyone familiar with the west highland way?
I may have an opportunity to hike this Scottish trail next summer, does anyone have any info on it? I'm trying to figure if I can hammock the trail. I have researched enough to know the basics but am looking for any personal experiences.
The WHW is a terrific trail. I hiked it about 10 years ago. Rocky and Swamp Fox are there now and have a Trail Journal:

I don't think a hammock would be a good idea. There are some trees along the way, but not many.

I haven't yet hiked the WHW but did pick up an excellent guide book on the trail,
"The West Highland Way," by Jacquetta Megarry. Sounds like a wonderful hike. Highly recommend by a friend of mine who did it. Safety Pins
Wow, what a couple of adventurers! I'm going to drop them a note, so many questions from the Tattoo to the hike.

We leave for Scotland this Thursday - no time to do the whole WHW but we'll be able to do little sections of it. I hope to summit Ben Navis just 'cause it's there. Just take the "waterproofs" and go for it!
Its a beautiful area, last time I was there Ben Nevis rose up out of the fog, Fort William is a nice town as well. On a side note this was my first brush with hiking, watching all the hikers fire up their little stoves out side a food store in Fort William.
Enjoy, have a safe trip.
