Practically every non-lake or river water source is dried up or too dry to use right now in this area. Today was the first rain in about a month and it wasn't much at all. I would highly suggest stashing water at road crossings or packing a ton for this section.

Expect the springs and branches to be dry or near dry. Plan to check water at every point and shelter. You might want to stash water supplies in the Buck Mountain area (very well hidden). Then at Watauga Dam Road and TN91 crossings.
There is one source near Iron Mtn Shelter that has been reported as contaminated. Signs should be posted.
I was at Carvers Gap and Dennis Cove last week. The spring at Grassy Ridge was low but flowing. For other springs that I didn't see there, Stan Murray & Doll Flats have been known to dry up fast.
At Dennis Cove, the small branch coming off the ridge was dry until the mouth of the hollow. It would be easier to pick up water at Laurel Fork or Kincora. Moreland Gap you might have to go further down the gap toward the forest road.
Now this area has received rains, will the springs be back and Iron mountain springs fresh again?

I did Carver's Gap to Hampton, TN at the end of May and it was dry then but I was able to get water at Bradley Gap, Doll Flats, The Mountaineer Falls Shelter water appeared to be flowing pretty good at the time, and Moreland Gap way down the hill.... I also came across pretty good sized creek near sugar hollow? maybe about a mile before I got to Doll Flats.... My buddy who did Hampton to Damascus the second week in June said it most sources were dried up on the section....... Cabin & Buli's advice should be heeded given conditions since then.....
Cabin or Buli*** did you happen to check the water source at the Mountaineer Falls Shelter or this creek near (Sugar Hollow?) when you guys were out?

I haven't been back on that side of Big Pine since March. But I saw Sugar Hollow Branch dry last summer. Very little flow at Mountaineer Falls. And just a small cascade at Jones Falls. The sources for Laurel Fork were flowing but definitely a large drop in level.

There has been 2 days of sustanined rainfall from the fallout of Tropical Storm Fay. Thank you Fay.
We are still around 5 to 6 inches under avg rainfall for the year.
But we will need much more to regain normal waterlevels.
