Hey can anyone tell me about the water in SNP.
I know there is a ton of places to get water 'but are any of the springgs running dry.
Trying to figure out how much water to pack.
Thanks

Not a complete list of all water sources, but it's pretty close.

We haven't had much rain in this area for a while so some of the high springs may be getting a little slow if not dry. It that case the sources become the streams in the low part of the valleys and hollows which can be a couple of hours round trip off the AT. Some of the fire roads you'll pass will get you down to the streams and back to the trail in about an hour if need be.

Hopefully it will be better by the end of the week. Fay's remnants are moving through starting tomorrow. An inch to over two inches expected.

I was out in SNP for a short bit the weekend of 16 Aug. Simmons Gap Ranger station has water. There is no water between Simmons Gap and Hightop Hut (~6.1 miles north). The spring downhill from High Top Hut was running fine, the boxed spring on Hightop Mtn was at a trickle with maybe a foot of water in the box. No water between Hightop Mtn and South River Picnic Grounds (~5.9 miles north). South River Picnic area has water in the rest rooms and a great outside fountain. The boxed spring at Pococin Cabin had water, but at a trickle (~3.4 miles north of the Picnic Grounds) The spring on the AT at ~3.5 miles morth of the Picnic Grounds was flowing and could yield a couple of liters before having to refill. Refreshments and water are available at the Lewis Mtn Campground (~5.3 miles north of the Picnic Grounds) the Spring at Bearfence Hut was flowing well. No water between Bearfence and Milam Gap.

When you planning your hike? Fay, as well as other storm(s) could change these reports for the better. I'm looking at doing it again this year around the beginning of October.

That'll be cool, maybe we'll get to share a hut - not just pass on the trail.

Yepp, finally got some long overdue rain today (all day). :) Hopefully it'll last a few more days like the weather people are promising.

Remnants of Fay have helped. It rained much of 8/27 and continues today (8/28). It's supposed to clear up by the weekend and get hot again, however, so our gain may be temporary.

The spring at Pass Mt. Hut was running strong last night, 8/27.

Sounds like things are looking up. I think with the projected path of Hanna the park may get even more rain in this next week or so. All of this is sounding good for more water sources by the time I hit the park in the middle of the month.

I stayed at Rock Springs Hut in March and from what I hear local legend says it has "never" run dry or frozen and is the most reliable source in SNP. But that was word of mouth from many other hikers and it was a very nice spring, some of the better tasting water I have ever had.

I'll mark that as a definate wet one for my trip. I figure with all the way stops etc in the park you can always fill up there as well.

I'm leaving tomorrow -- 19 Oct -- and will be on the trail same day. This departure date is much later than I had planned, but what can you do. Hope to still meet you. -- Happy Trails:sun
