MSR is selling it as an emergency shelter, but frankly, it looks bigger than most poncho tarps I've seen and it only weighs 6 oz. It's hexagonal, and the ridge looks like it would work with a hammock.

I'll find out about the hammock thing in a couple of days when I have a chance to test out my new cinch strap system, but I'm actually thinking it's a reasonable shelter for one all on it's own.

Anyone have one? I have one (it just came yesterday), but I've been swamped with work and have guests for the weekend, and haven't had time to mess with it yet. Also, the area of my yard where I can pitch my hammock or a tarp now has a yellow jacket nest in the ground, so I have to go elsewhere! I already got stung last week because I didn't know it was there, so I'm a bit wary now.

Concerning the E-wing's use as a solo shelter, the hexagonal shape doesn't offer any protection against the slightest bit of blowing rain. It would seem that a bivy sack would also be required (but there goes your weight savings!).

I agree with book burner, however for short term use such as night or weekend trips when you know most definetly there will not be rain, I think this would be an excellent solo shelter. I'm definetly planning on pickin one up.

If you know most definitely that there won't be rain, what would you need the tarp for?

I'm thinking it would be too small for effective hammocking use, especially in heavy rains. It doesn't appear to offer any side or end protection from wind-driven rain. Thanks for the thought, though. :D

Actually, I pitched my Hennessey with it this evening, and I have better coverage than the stock asym tarp. The hexagonal shape is what does it.

What are the dimensions of this thing? I don't see them on the websites. It looks like the correct shape for hammocking, but is it long enough?
