What's the closest road crossing on the AT to the NC/GA border, does anyone know?

Directions?

8 Miles to the South in GA HWY 76 has a parking area at Dick's Creek Gap
3 Miles to the South in GA HWY 72 is shown at Blue Ridge Gap though I don't see the road on the map
7 Miles to the North in NC HWY 71 has a parking area at Deep Gap

All these are off my AT MAP SET with the Guide Book... personal experience comes in Feb 09...

Hope this helps

Dicks Creek Gap is a real paved road.

Blue Ridge Gap and Deep Gap are not "highways". They are forest service roads.

Blue Ridge Gap is close to Dicks Creek.

Deep Gap is accessed from North Carolina; west of Franklin.

Wow!

Thanks ... this is EXACTLY the type of info I was looking for.

I'm doing a 5-6 day section hike in October and would like to finish up Georgia by hiking the GA border to Neels Gap.

Any advice is welcome.

Blue Ridge Gap would have the least amount of backtracking or extra hiking. Its also not as well known as the other trailheads. Contact Ron Haven or the Hiker Hostel for shuttle info.

Since you are hiking to Neels Gap, Dicks Creek would be quicker to get to than Deep Gap. Disadvantage is that you hike north to Bly and then turn around.

If your next hike after this would be to start at Bly and hike north into NC then it would make the most sense to start at Deep Gap and continue to Neels. Then you would start at Deep Gap on your next hike and not have to backtrack to Bly.

There are all kinds of options. Keep in mind that both the Hiker Hostel and Ron Haven can take care of your shuttle as well as provide you with a reasonably priced place to stay.

From the Georgia state line back to Neels Gap is...[drumroll] 44.7 miles.
It's a great way to end your hike.

I heard that the 4x4 road up to Bly Gap is still used but can be rough from time to time.
