View Full Version : Now what?
No money, (permanently?) sore knees, sleeping on Mom's couch. What are you gonna do now? I guess I'll have to get a job.

Congrats on finishing your hike. The knees should stop hurting. My feet hurt for a few months. Follow your dreams.

I don't remember hearing much about the post hike health problems before 2000. Permanently sore may be a bit too much drama. I had sore feet after my thru.
I ran a road race the other day. My right knee had been a bit sore before the race but today I am hobbled. I think it was a bad idea. It was my worst race ever. I am pounding the ibuprofen and icing it a lot today.
Congratulations on completing your thru hike.

Congrats on finishing your thru. All the same should have planned for this ahead of time, maybe put back some extra money for reentry. A job is probably a good idea. Most of us have them.

I guess I'll have to get a job. :confused:Reentry after a thru-hike is something in my opinion that everyone attempting or completing one needs to plan for. In a sense, it needs to be addressed before or during the thru-hike. I would suspect most people would take some recuperation time afterwards, and have a little money to fall back upon, so as not to have to be rushed out to find a job immediately upon reentry.
The 'permanent' part was a joke, I've been gradually starting to run again since I got back, but they definitely seem to still be recovering slowly.
< Sage is also broke and a little lost after finishing his thru.
I had grad school lined up after the hike, so I'm busy in the rat race sense, but I am already sick of the same old sitting around with cold beer in the fridge

Your mom is letting you sleep on her couch and you have no job and you don't go to school? Take out the trash, vacuum, do the dishes, offer to do her shopping for her, etc., etc., etc.

Congrats! Consider your current circumstances new trail to adapt to. You have certainly learned how to do this by now. Do as many good deeds as possible to ward off being depressed. Get out and strart building your new life ASAP - the sooner you land on your feet, the sooner you will find ways to derive happiness from your new surroundings. Spend a lot of time with friends - share stories of your travels and catch with them on their stuff. Just like the AT, you will be energized by the people around you or energize them (which will make you feel good).
I stayed with my parents for exactly two weeks. We still joke that I called it "living on a submarine." Tons of rules, very little privacy, small living quarters and the little ****zhu dog which I re-named my XO. Although I very much appreciated them opening their home to me, I couldn't wait to get out.
Good luck to you! It may not feel like it, but you have a great opportunity right now to start a phase of your life from scratch...with no obligations and a clear heart that thru-hikers know well.
As for your knees - what did you do on the AT? Pop some advil and keep moving ; )
Happy hiking!
