View Full Version : Advice: Two-Day Loop Trails off AT in VA
Hi Fellow Backpackers, I'm a new transplant from the West Coast living in Virginia now. I'm looking for advice on some two to three-day loop hikes off the AT in Virginia. Any ideas? Thanks!

How about a loop from Whitetop Mtn through the Grayson Highlands and back on the Pine Mtn or Crest Trail. It's really a beautiful hike, and perfect for a weekend.

What does off the AT mean? Starting on the AT and then looping around? Or not on the AT at all?

Shenandoah has some great hiking. Old Rag / White Oak Canyon are classic trails - they can be done in separate day hikes though. I also like the Big Run valley that can be done in two.
Get the PATC day hikes in Shenadoah for ideas.

Good idea - here's the link: http://www.patc.us/store/guide.htm
And now that you're a Virginian, you may want to consider joining the PATC. Or since you live in Norfolk, there's the Tidewater AT Club: http://www.tidewateratc.org/

I agree the Big Run Loop (around Mile Post 80) in SNP is a great two day loop. The Three Ridges - Maur Hollow trail (around Mile Post 14) of the Blue Ridges Parkway is also great 2 day loop.
welcome to VA! agree with the three ridges/mau-har trail loop! anything in SNP too! there is also a thread on here called "VA hikers group" which you might want to search for to help you get started!
when i moved to VA a year or so ago, i purchased a book titled "exploring the appalachian trail, hikes in the virginias" by david lillard and gwyn hicks. it's a great resource for AT sections and loop hikes!
good luck and have fun!:welcome

I did Dark hollow falls trail out of Big meadows, went down to Rose River Falls Trail, across skyline drive to the AT stayed at Rock Springs hut, and then hiked out on skyline drive to big meadows... fantastic loop, no problem in 2 days, we took our time and stayed 3 nights at rock springs, but it was winter and not crowded
