View Full Version : Will a civilian trangia fit a USGI Canteen Cup Stove?
I still use the old school canteen, cup, and stove that all nests together. Not ultralight, but simple and rugged.
Can anybody tell me for sure if the civilian version of the trangia (the one that comes in the "mini" kit w/ alum pot and fry pan) will fit under the USGI canteen stove? I know the standard Swedish military trangia is too big.
Thanks!

They issued a stove stand for the GI Canteen Cup that was shaped like the cup with an open top and bottom, it stowed on the outside of the cup. It was designed to be used with the issue trioxane heat tabs, which, as anyone who's used them knows, usually suck, sometimes they won't even light. The same setup with Esbit tabs would work pretty well most likely.
I just looked at Ranger Joe's and Brigade Quartermaster and I didn't see it. Maybe check a surplus store near where you live.
I've got one of those, but much prefer the trangia burner. I really like my military one, just trying to justify the cost of buying the civilian model for this one application. If it fits, I will buy one for sure.

Then ditch the canteen cup and get a pot from Anti-Gravity gear or a K-mart grease pot. That canteen cup is great if you are carrying GI web gear/canteens but it ain't so great otherwise.

You're assuming I'm not carrying a canteen and assuming I don't already have other pots.
Both assumptions are wrong. Why else would I still be using a canteen cup if I wasn't using a canteen?
I am using both, and I would like to know if anybody has used a civilian trangia inside the stove. I thought this was the straight forward forum? I tried to make my post as direct as possible.
And for reference, my first line even said I'm still using a canteen and matching gear.

If that is the case then nothing will be lighter than the cup with stand and esbit, not to mention esbits' fire-starting capacity. That is what I keep packed in my web gear.

You must not read very well.
I didn't ask about lightweight (I'm talking about USGI gear for pete's sake) or what you use. I have a lightweight set up.
All I want to know is if the Trangia will fit the GI stove. If you don't know the answer to that, thank you for your time but you have nothing to offer in this thread.
I have done it you have to put more holes at the top like v's and its best to use the simmer ring to keep the flame a little low if not when wide open to much comes out the sides.

Thank you. Do you happen to have any pics of this set up?
Other than the items you mentioned, how well did the set up work for you? I'm not looking for a speed attempt at boiling water or anything, just enough to get to a boil and maybe stay there a few min to cook my food (I dont freezerbag cook).
Thanks.

I have used my civilain Trangia burner with a canteen cup stove stand. It is a bit of a tight fit, but the stand is aluminum and malleable.
I widened the bottom slightly just using my hands. I also widened the top opening. I did this for two reasons: as built, the cup sticks in the stove stand so the stand comes up with the cup. Second, opening the top wider provides the space needed for the trangia to work properly.
But of course that means the cup will fall through the opening. I drilled four holes near the top rim of the stand and used two pieces of coat hanger wire to support the cup. The wires store easily at the bottom of my canteen pouch.
So now I can use the canteen cup and stove stand with alcohol, triox, esbit or wood.
I also made a lid for the canteen cup and an aluminum foil windscreen that is cone shaped and covers the entire set up. I've used this several time on trips, including a week on the AT, and it worked very well. I did not stop watch it, but the windscreen made a difference in time, which means using less fuel, which means carrying less fuel. I also added some fiberglass insulation to the Trangia which slows it down a bit.
But its all heavy. Eventually, I switched to an MSR Titan Kettle, a homemade wire stand, an aluminum flashing windscreen and an Ion stove, although it will also use the Trangia if I like. Much, much lighter, but has to be stored in the pack. I also made a cone-shaped windscreen that works very well, but cannot be stored in the pot. I also have a larger titanium pot, stand, windscreen setup and use the Trangia with that. Also lighter, but also stored in the pack.
I've used a military canteen and cup carried on my hip since I was a kid and like that it can stay with me when I don't have the pack on (like for side trips out of a base camp) and puts some weight right on my hips. I also like its ruggedness. Someday maybe one of us with make a titanium canteen in the same shape, matched with a titanium cup, a titanium stove stand and a titanium windscreen carried in a belt pouch made of something tough and light, like maybe Tyvek. :-?

Yes, the Trangia will fit nicely in the USGI canteen cup stove, but you can't put the cup all the way in or it will put out the flame. I turn mine to one side and rest it on top. See picture.

That's what I'm talking about! Only took 11 posts before a definitive answer too!
