I thought the ADT covered this area.

It covers some, but not all. There are many great areas to see that the ADT doesn't reach to the north, or the south. I think its a great plan, another trail to add to the list for me.

The article is too scant in details to get a feel of what this trail would be like. My impression is walking through miles and miles... of grassland, sounds kind of boring.

Apparently you haven't been to Badlands National Park. Simply AMAZING!

I'll put that on my list. One day I will get out west.

The article is talking about a north/south trail. The ADT heads east/west.

I don't know how many of you watch Man vs. Wild, but in last week's episode Bear Grylls was in South Dakota. He visited the Black Hills, the Badlands, and part of the Great Plains. All of these areas were simply amazing. When he was in the plains area, he found a natural spring in the middle of nowhere. It was pretty awesome.
