I Plan on carrying my down sweater in march but would like to replace my fleace with a fiber filled pull over or jacket for the rest of my 09 NoBo Thru Hike. I don't want to buy an expensive one from EMS or somewhere for $100-200 plus. Idealy I like it to weigh the same or less than my fleace (16 oz.) and have better loft/thinckness and compressibilty. Any sugestions? Back in 2004 I recall someone talking about homemade ones you could buy cheap.

Thanks ahead of time.

Also order a Bomber Hat kit from Ray Way, you'll need it with the field jacket liner, you gotta keep your noggin covered.

Another idea is to occasionally make a pass through your local second hand store. All kinds of things useful for hiking can be found there.

thanks for the plug Lyle! Unfortunately my sewing skills are not up to collars yet. Consider a neck gaiter or balaclava like this http://www.armynavysales.com/p-366-polypropylene-neck-warmer.aspx

That thing is great but I think you need something a bit thicker for quilt sleeping below forty.

Get an Army field jacket liner and have a tailor sew a front zipper, sice you do not sew.
