I plan to pick up my next section hike Oct and will fly into Roanoke Va. Can I pack a bottle of alcohol for my stove in my pack or will I have to stop in Roanoke and pick some up?

No way! Even something as small as lighters are forbidden.

don't even think of packing alcohol on a plane
I'm fairly certain it will be a big NO..
No flammables in either checked or carry-on bags.

I got away with a fuel canister on Amtrak and bus lines -- but on an airplane, no way I'd try.

Yeah, what they all said. You risk a big fine and jail time (not to mention a fiery death) . Not a good idea. You can buy it at your destination.

Also consider cleaning you stove or take a new one never used.

Definitely do not do that. On other modes of transpo you can easily get away with it-amtrak, etc.-but trying to get it on a flight is just asking for trouble.

Times have changed. The last time I flew from here to Seattle I packed an old Peak1 stove and a pint of Coleman fuel in my checked luggage. After 911 you can't even think of such things.
If you must take it with you, send it ground to a UPS or Fedex location at your destination
Mark the package ORM-D

Definetly NOT! Please for your own health do not attempt that also make sure to burn all the fuel out of your stove or take a new one. If they have a bomb dog around you are likely to have a very bad experience.

Or buy alcohol when you get to your destination.
Or buy a Zip Stove, WoodGas stove or any of the other wood stoves. I believe these are aircraft safe stoves.

I'm not sure if they carry alcohol fuel, but there's an outfitter (Outdoor Trails (http://www.outdoortrails.com/daleville.html)) just over the hill (west) of the AT crossing of US-220 in Daleville. If nothing else, the manager could probably point you to a source.

Took a penny stove back and forth from CA to AL back in July. Just burn all the fuel out before you pack it in your checked bag. You can get denatured alcohol or Heet from any hardware or auto parts store, I've even bought Heet @ convenience stores.
There will be plenty of opportunities to refuel. Leave the stuff at home and be sure to burn any residue from your stove. You can send fuel well labeled in the mail if your must.

Manchester, NH wouldn't even allow me to check my campstove because fuel had been run through it. I now mail my stove and pick up fuel when I land .
even Greyhound busses will ask you if you have fuel in your backpack. No one wants to carry fuel because of the possibility of fires.

The flight attendant will be happy to sell you open containers of alcohol on your flight.:rolleyes:It must be consumed before landing. ;) :banana

FYI - Lighters are no longer forbidden in your carryon luggage. The rule that was given so much attention when it was imposed was very quietly relaxed a little while later.
