Last fall, hikers who had done this section told me it was extremely dry -- most springs at the shelters had dried up, long distances (20+ miles in some cases) between other water sources, trail angels were leaving jugs of water at road crossings. Is the situation better this fall?

my observations dating back to approx. the latter part of july-

paul c. wolfe shelter creek was running fantastic!
bear spring(piped spring) near humpback rocks, very slow
dripping rock off of BRP has two shallow springs, both full
maupin-field shelter, very slow with a few shallow pools
seeley-woodworth shelter(piped spring), awesome! high flow rate!
hog camp gap, one shallow spring but full

sources that i was told about but did not visit(strictly rumored)-

harpers creek shelter, creek is supposed to be running well
cow camp shelter, dry????

hope this helps for at least the start of yer' journey! PM me if you have any questions?! good luck!

Decent rain lately in the area south of Rockfish, Nelson-Amherst-Bedford counties, so I imagine decent water in mountains too.

DAKS -- Thanks for the specific water source info. Sounds like I'll be in good shape long enough to find out what the water situation is farther down the trail.

Press -- Good to hear about the rain. It eases my concerns about the rest of the section.
