View Full Version : NJ bears

Yup, we got bears, go figure. NJ the home of the Tpk, refineries, and the wonderful urban centers, has bear issues.
I saw a black bear cub about 100 feet from the High Point Shelter in NJ about 2 weeks ago. My immediate thought was to euthanize him.
Old Grouse 10-06-2008, 10:41 Connecticut only has a few relative to NJ, but I figure it's just a matter of time until they get EZ Pass and cross over (presumably via the Bear Mt. Bridge). In my job I get to drive around early in the morning and not a day goes by that I don't see deer, wild turkeys, red tails, etc. - none of which were common around here in my youth. Heck, we didn't even have possums until the 1960s.
I just wanted to clarify what New Jersey is like to some outsiders...

Red line roughly denotes the path of the AT
Also forgot to draw Route 9, which divides Civilized Suburbia from Jackson, NJ.
(if you're from NJ you understand my jest)
((if you're from Jackson NJ, you're still scratching your head))
(((you are not a piney. they do not have electricity in cape may county)))
i agree... but as a piney *****, I'd say the piney borders don't go that close to the shore.
My boundaries of piney territory are horribly skewed, my two roommates hail from Cape May, and they're pineys to me for sure!
woo just miss the douche bag zone, but I think I'd rather be a douche then a piney.

You must have never met a piney.

that would be more fitting.
Cookerhiker 10-06-2008, 13:24 Growing up in Northern NJ (Ridgewood) in the 50s and 60s, we were told that there weren't any bears around anymore and that despite its name, Bear Mountain, NY was devoid of bears. True, on hikes and Boy Scout outings in NJ and Hariman Park, we never saw or even heard of anyone who saw a bear. How times have changed - at last year's ATC Conference in Mahwah, someone saw a bear on Bear Mountain. Imagine that!
The irony is that bears and people have both been moving into NW Jersey over the same time frame i.e. the last 2-3 decades.
On behalf of Cape May County I would like to succeed from the "Piney's" and be hereby referred to as one of the following.
1. Little Philly
2. Retired citizens who wish they could retire in Florida but couldn't afford it
RE: The article........
BIG DUHHHHHH!
Let the hunt begin!

Much appreciated humor!
Yep. We've got more deer here in RI than the natives at the time of the Pilgrims ever dreamed of.
The 'burbs must be good for the 'Bruins, too!

Couldnt afford it? Have you looked at property taxes lately?
In my life i have spanned two zones, Urbia, and Suburbia. NJ is actually pretty scenic when you get up on the ridgeline that the AT follows. Check out my gallery for a couple of examples.
And yes, the coast is filled with douches, but only during the summer. In the off season, its actually not that bad.

I never said any thing bad about NJ....I was just mentioning that I disagree that Cape May is part of the "pineys" and that the overwhelming majority of residents in Cape May county are relocated Philadelphians or senior citizens who wish they retired in Florida.
I am just glad not to have the gotti style douches like the northern coast towns.
sasquatch2014 10-06-2008, 18:23 I was taking my Chain Saw certification Class last January down in Tuxedo are Sterling Forest to be more specific and one of the instructors was from the parks service in NJ. He was telling us how this past spring they were clearing out a blow down in one of the town parks and unknown to the sawyer a black bear had taken up residence under the root ball. When he began to saw the tree it work up the bear and luckily it was tired and moving slowly and ambled off but scared the hell out of the cutting crew.
