What do you girls wear to sleep in the winter? I have tried under armour tops and bottoms, cotton blends, synthetic blends and seem to overheat or freeze regardless of the proper temp bag I use. I'm at a loss heading into my favorite hiking season! Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Mid-weight wool - best of anything I've tried. Also, I currently use a down jacket and synthetic insulated pants with a quilt as my sleeping system. I've had my current 12.7 oz custom Nunatak quilt down to freezing comfortably with my Cocoon Pants and Montbell Down Inner Parka. I need to order a heavier quilt for much colder weather though, but is it ever great to get up in the morning still wearing part of my warmth.

This also helps prevent overheating, since I can throw the quilt off if I get too hot, and pull it back over me as I cool down. This is extra important to me, since part of what causes me to freeze is getting too hot and sweating at some point, then getting chilled from the moisture that builds up from being too hot.

What kind of a sleeping pad do you use with your quilt? How do you keep from getting cold underneath? I'd love to use a winter quilt.

I use Patagonia Capilene 2 tops and bottoms, lo-cut mid weight smart wool socks and a knit cap

I'll second the mid weight wool for a nighttime base layer. It is warm and being a natural fiber, doesn't get smelly like synthetics can. And for those of us with the nighttime sweats thing it is nice and absorbent, and wicks the damp away from the skin in time for the early morning shivers!

I'll second the Nunatak quilt too. I have the backcountry blanket. I use it with an Exped 7 short down mat. A toasty combination in the cold.

I wear: fleece pants, fleece socks and layers on top. I usually wear a tank or tshirt, midweight capilene and sometimes a fleece top/jacket. When I heat up during the night, I just take off one layer. Plus a warm hat and gloves when it's really cold.

Sounds good. What do you put under your feet to accommodate the shortness of the Expad?
