Do any of you female hikers wear men's tighty whities? I was told specialy female soldiers that men's briefs are the way to go for underwear. I was also told its better to go braless when you are a size 34b or even a size 36c. Any openions?

is there any former female soldiers/marines out there who can tell me what is carried in the old alice rucksack and web gear and where it is placed in each?

No, I can't imagine why a woman would want to wear the excess material in men's briefs, but if anyone does, maybe they will enlighten us.

Braless would be a matter of choice. I recently found I like wearing a tank with a built in shelf bra quite well.

"braless when you are a size 34b or even a size 36c. "

OMG.. When you are my size, then you should worry about going braless.
If I did that, my knees would hit my boobs everytime I took a step:D:D:D

Oh and MC....I dont think I would want that bulkiness in my groin area.
I an thinking about thigh length spandex. Kinda like biker shorts but not. I dont know if they would rub or start running up between the legs. I do wear these when I take my evening walks and about every 1/4 mile, I have to pull on them a little. I am thinking this may stop chaffing.

I will recommend plaid cotton flannel boxers for male or female. I know they are cotton, but one set of cotton is manageable. I can wash them with boiling water from my Kelly Kettle and they dry fairly quick if I wear them on my head for a while. While they are in the wash, spin, dry cycle I have other things to wear that don't require briefs, like my long skin layer pants under shorts, or my 200wt fleece pants if its winter. Yeah, I'm quite the fashion statement.

Anyhow, I've never had trouble with cotton flannel boxers as long as its just the one pair. It seems if you bring two pair one of them will always be wet, but if you bring just one it will be dry enough to wear at least half the time. On a long trip it helps to have some boiling water to spare. So maybe a little extra fuel, or something like a Kelly Kettle or Hobbo Stove, or 3 rocks and a coffee can.

I always wear ExOfficio undies (6 week underwear is what they are called) and my Patagonia built in bra tank. I have to agree that the bulk of the boxers would be aggitating and seems like it could cause unnecessary irratation around the upper leg area, IMO.

I've been wearing the ExOfficios too, on my last trip I bought a pair of these and found them to be more comfortable and dried faster

The only possible advantage I could see is that men's briefs don't have that irritating lace around the leg holes, but have soft cotton seam binding instead.

However, since it's not advisable to wear cotton for hiking anyway, I don't think it would be a good idea.

The Smartwool boy-style briefs for women and very nice. They don't get stinky no matter how sweaty you get and they're very comfortable (but not too hot since they're made of very lightweight wool).
