Hi just wonder do any the fold your tent up and put it inside your pack in a waterproof bag. I read that if you roll your tent all the time it can cause it to weak and get tears in it.
:-?

I do but rarely the same way twice. Stuffing takes too much room compared with organized fold or roll

I stuff my tent and sleeping bag in seperate a ultra light water proof stuff sacks. I never roll them up for just that reason. I go an extra step and keep them both in a garbage bag. What little extra clothing I carry I keep in zip locks. I figure the extra care is worth it. The last thing I want is a wet sleeping bag or to unfold a wet tent. And this also helps keep my tent away from other items in my pack if I get caught in the rain.

If my tent's dry, it goes in the stuff sack that it came in, and inside my large volume pack. If it's very wet, the stuff sack gets lashed on the outside of the pack. It is better for the longer life of the tent not to fold it in the same places every time. Whether you just stuff it or fold/roll it differently each time achieves the same results . . . longer life of the tent.

I roll my tents. Stuffing causes many samll creases that over time can weaken the materail. Its a myth that stuffing is better. See this years gear test issure from backpaing magzine. When wet I sometimes place it in a plastic bag.

This is not true- read the printed material provided by the MANUFACTURER that came with the tent. Mine says to- stuff in the sack to avoid breaking of materials fibers caused by repeated folding.

My car doesnt need an oil change at 3000 miles, either.

I use water resistant/proof stuff sacks for all my gear, and then stuff my tent fly, body, and ground sheet in loose. Everything seems to fit better this way, stuff sacks for the tent seemed a little redundant in my system of packing.

I roll my Contrail on even numbered days and stuff it on odd. And I stay in town only on Feb 29th. The skunk ape is a distant cousin to Sasquatch, who is directly related to the Yeti. And they all come from Uranus.

I've seen advise both ways. It seems there are those who advocate never fold, and those that advocate never stuff. So, if I don't fold, and I don't stuff, then how do you transport a tent?

Wow, 10 posts in a thread about tents... and some hammock hanger hasn't posted about how you wouldn't have to worry about it if you were using a hammock! :)

Gotta be a record!

Seriously, since the tents I've had have all lasted a very long time and I've never encountered fabric breakdown from folding/stuffing, I'm going to keep doing what I've been doing. Now let's see . . . can't remember how I do it. Will have to take notes and make a You Tube video next time I'm out! :D :p
