I'm going to hike Mt. Leconte tomorrow 10/29/08 and on the news they said that last night higher parts of the mts. had 1.5 inches of snow. Does anyone know? Snow isn't a big deal to me on the trail but just so as the road to get to it isn't closed.

Thanks guys.

441 was closed today due to ice, and I would guess with the cold temperautes tonight, it will still be closed. But Rainbow Falls, Trillium Gap, and Bullhead trailheads should be fine. Here was yesterday's temperatures:

Anderson is correct, the road was closed, Bull Head and Rainbow is the way to go, no back trackin, up 1 trail and down the other, can't handle Alum 'cause of the crowds, but ya got to do it at least once.

Not sure if you are on the trail yet, but here goes... Mt LeConte had 1.5 inches of snow on it on 10/28/08, and today's forcast has a high of 46 with winds between 15 - 20, gusting to 30.
Tonight is clear, low fo 23. Westerly winds of 5 - 10mph becoming north.
Thursday is sunny with a high of 55. North wind around 5mph.
According to the Park phone line, Newfound Gap Road is still closed due to ice...
Have a great time!

yea, best view from up there with the air being so clear. The ice going up the last 2 miles may be an issue because of water runoff. Make sure you have Yaktrax.

Well it was open, the road that is. No one on the trail much but it was covered with ice on teh way up at about ten a.m. and was all mud/water on the way down at about 1:30 p.m. but we finished it in about hours. Great hike this time of the year.
