View Full Version : Suggestions for a Four-Day Trip in GA/NC/SC/AL?
Hi All,
I'm looking for suggestions for a four-day trip over Thanksgiving Weekend for my boyfriend and me. We're both in good shape and can handle just about anything. The biggest problem I see is the shortage of daylight.
I was thinking maybe the Georgia Loop? Or is there something in southern NC or SC or AL I should consider? I'm looking for a loop configuration. We've been to Shining Rock a couple of times already, to Chattooga/Ellicott a couple of times, Cohutta, etc. and I've section hiked the GA AT and we recently exhausted Panthertown Valley over the course of a long weekend. We've done a lot of day hiking as well so we're trying to find something new.
I'm thinking 15 mile days are doable, even with lots of ups and downs. We like mountains and great views :)
Thanks!
I don't know about the millage, but you could probably make a loop out of the AT and Bartram Trail between Wayah Bald and Cheoah Bald.

What about some sort of loop with the AT, BMT, and DRT in Georgia? Not sure on the mileage on that, but DWM here is an expert on those trails.

Yes, that is the Georgia Loop I'm considering. It's about 55 miles or so.

Well, I haven't hiked all of it, but what I have is a great hike!

I'd like to see a trip report on this hike. You'd better be ready for "about anything" when hiking the DRT:D

Just a suggestion here, If you have not been to Savage Gulf State Natural Area near Monteagle TN. it is a fantastic place to visit. Especially if you like views!!
Great canyon on the Cumberland Plateau Escarpment, great views from the Rim Trail, 55 miles of great trails both in the canyon and on top of the plateau.
10 campgrounds and Hobbs Cabin with virgin timber and fantastic rock formations.
Here is a link, just click or scroll down to Savage Gulf.

At least put this on your list, you will love it.

Look into doing the Art Loeb Trail from Brevard to Waynesville NC.
Cherokee Foothills Trail.
Benton MacKaye.
Blue Ridge sections of the Mountains to Sea Trail. Mt Mitchell to Grandfather Mtn is some of the best sections.

plenty of 4 day loop options in the Smokies. and there are also plenty of ways to stay off the main trails to reduce the people factor since it will be Thanksgiving.
Personally, I think I have decided to do 5 days along PA's Mid State Trail.
Thanks, All.
These are great ideas. I've wanted to get up to the Savage Gulf area for a while, but I'm afraid of the all the creek crossings in winter (too cold and wet!). I think I'll put that on the agenda for summer -- is there potential to do a lot of river wading (one of my new hobbies).
I'm thinking some hiking in the Standing Indian area in late November might be good. It would allow me to add a few miles on to my section hiking total :)
