I've posted previously about Pennsylvania's Schuylkill River Trail which when complete will run from Philadelphia through Port Clinton and end at Pottsville. Since WhiteBlaze lacked a thread dedicated specifically to this trail, I wanted to start one today where information can be gathered in a single location. Click on the link below for a wealth of information about this new and exciting trail.

Today, Reading Eagle ran Darrin Youker's Schuylkill River Heritage Area would suffer under budget (http://readingeagle.com/article.aspx?id=215416) on page 1.

For those who don't know, William Penn Foundation also provided funding to build William Penn Shelter, hence its name.

According to linked information, the segment between Kernsville and State Street (http://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/index.php?/trail_head/state_street/) trailheads is now open to A.T. hikers at Port Clinton seeking off-road access by foot to Hamburg.

Other segments have been open for some time. Locally, in places, SRT is referred to by other names such as Bartram Trail where it intersects the A.T. at Port Clinton.

I didn't realize the segment connecting Kernsville with State Street had opened. Now that a short list of tasks requiring travel to Port Clinton has accumulated, I'll investigate and report back soon.

According to linked information, the segment between Kernsville Dam (http://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/index.php?/trail_head/kernsville_dam/) and State Street (http://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/index.php?/trail_head/state_street/) trailheads is now open to A.T. hikers at Port Clinton seeking off-road access by foot to Hamburg.

Trailhead maps above appear to provide conflicting information about SRT continuity between Kernsville Dam and State Street trailheads.

Reconstruction of State Street's bridge over Schuylkill River at this time complicates access and I have still not been able to verify a continuous route. More information will be provided as I am able to obtain it.

Neither of the maps above reflect the actual route and I'm not sure whether the current route is the final SRT alignment, but it's possible to walk a route closed to motorized vehicles from Port Clinton to Hamburg and likely has been for some time.

State Street trailhead is currently accessible to motorized vehicles only from the Hamburg side. It might be 4 miles from the A.T. and most people can walk it easily in 75 to 90 minutes. Anyone wishing to visit Cabela's or staying at Microtel Inn & Suites can access Industrial Drive from Kernsville trailhead.

State Street trailhead is opposite Hamburg Historical Society at 102 State Street, perhaps the best place to begin Historic Hamburg Walking Tour (http://www.historichamburg.com/pottsvillerepublican803.html). Click on the link to get some sense of what's been described by Berks County's historian as one of the most architecturally interesting communities in Pennsylvania.
