I'm looking for a good expedition weight base layer and I'm trying to decide between smartwool and Montbell.

I know a lot of people like smartwool, but has anybody tried Montbell?

Been wondering the same thing myself. I have a Smartwool microweight t-shirt and the microweight long johns, love 'em. Seems like the Montbell stuff is pretty well the same thought and slightly cheaper.

Give Icebreaker a look too.

IMO, the merino wool base layers from Icebreaker are the way to go. I love those.

Cheap polypros, hard to beat.

But if you wanna spend the bling, I'd look at the Icebreakers

I second the suggestion for Icebreaker. I have and both 190 and 320 weights and they are extremelly comfortable and warm. I have had Smartwool in the past, but will now stick with Icebreaker.

I use Smartwool for base, Montbell for the outer layer.

I do almost the exact same thing.

Couple layers of wool (my case Icebreaker). If too cool then add a vest and/or Montbell Peak. Once in camp the Montbell Thermawrap Parka. I have never hiked with the parka on.

Icebreakers....I have several different weights and styles and you just can't beat them.
