Wow. What an accomplishment! Hiking 232 miles -- the entire state of Pennsylvania -- and in only 5 years!
His accomplishment may seem small compared to the accomplishments of some who post here, but hiking all of Pennsylvania's A.T. is a lofty goal for someone new to hiking which can lead to other things. Relationships formed in pursuit of such challenges through involvement with SATC or other local clubs can lead to a desire to help maintain trails or support for trails in other ways.

Wow. What an accomplishment! Hiking 232 miles -- the entire state of Pennsylvania -- and in only 5 years!Well, I'll give him a round of applause. The award must have been of some importance to him and he earned it.
I know that Georgia offers a patch (http://www.georgia-atclub.org/gathru.html) for completing a state hike. Now we learn that PA does something similar. Do any other states? And has anyone ever applied for all the state hike awards?

he averaged 46.4 miles per year over 5 years, burned hundreds of thousands of calories and gets an award for "hiking the Appalachian Trail". Bill Bryson needs an award too

I think its great. Its not everyone can put their life on hold for 6 months to do the whole thing.
Oh, and read the article. He's been hiking for 5 years; he spent 3 of those years hiking the AT in PA.
Not surprising that WB can find a way to bitch and moan about his accomplishment. Sad.

It's not everyone. Wolf needs a new name: Rains on Parades.:welcome

Oh, and read the article. He's been hiking for 5 years; he spent 3 of those years hiking the AT in PA.He stitched together all of the PA AT in 3 years using day hikes, but the AT wasn't the only trail he was walking during that time.
There are other trails besides the AT, which is the main point of the article. Blasphemous, I know, because there are some here who think that any footsteps not directly between white blazes count as hiking.

Most people don't hike 232 miles in their entire lives.
I think what this guy did was great.

You forgot to mention the two pairs of hiking shoes he went through
I think it is a nice article. Something that may inspire other people to go out, exercise and maybe enjoy nature a little bit.
Good for him.
