I would like to go for a few days in december. Is bear bagging still needed during this time in ny?

Hey Adam, I'm 40 minutes away from leaving for Bear Mountain Park to do an overnighter at William Brien with my AMC Group, and personally, I am bearbagging.

Whether or not it's necessary is certainly debatable... But better safe than sorry.

Enjoy the snow,

With the trees in Bear Mountain/Harriman, it's trivial to set up a hang.

I know that a couple of bears have been seen this fall in Harriman, south of Bear Mountain.

Why do you think they call it bear mountain? :)

I live 5 miles from bear mountain and hiked camped for 15 years no bears just deer and snakes to many city slickers killed them 100 years ago. the only bagging you need to do is your trash. I blaze harriman day/night 4seasons, A new store just opened north of bmt where the trail meets rt 9

Just got back from my overnighter at bear mountain.

Saw one fresh dropping of bear scat 0.6mi from the W Mountain Shelter (near the Timp-Torne/AT Intersection. It was practically steaming.

I was amazed at the immense amounts of Bobcat Scat. There must have been 12-15 little presents left behind at the higher elevations.

Didn't hear any bears overnight, but I did hear something get eaten by some bird, i assume.

Go to the Timp-Torne / AT Intersection, I shoved a stick in some scat about .1mi nobo on the AT off on the "east" side.

Forgot to mention the nice amount of deer in the area. One jumped out not 20 feet from us.

I lived about 10 miles outside Harriman for 20 years and I've only heard of bear sightings once or twice, however, bears are now becoming more common. My parents live just outside the park, near Dunderburg Mountain and my father had a bear in his yard last year.

Personally, I don't think you need to hang bear bags, but like people say better safe than sorry.

Bear Mountain was originally named Bare Mountain but the state thought it would attract more tourists if the name Bare was changed to Bear.

So even during winter months the bears are still active?

They are less active, but the food source also becomes more scarce.

Bears don't find a cave and fall asleep in it for 5 months like the groundhog. They can get up, mosey around, poop, etc.

Also, It isn't even winter yet. The other day it was like 65* out.
