hi everyone i'm new here. someone said i should check it out here since i am planning a thru hike for 2012. one question i'm looking for an answer to is... what pack do i want next. i dont have to have the lightest pack out there. i like the kelty packs because they are very durible and i like being able to seperate they gear and easily but the keltys are just too heavy. so thats what i like does anyone have any ideas? :-?

thanks in advance. :D

i made the mistake of buying my pack before i got my gear. i needed 5500 ci to carry my old gear. now 3600 ci works fine.

i've got my gear. i need about 4600ci for what i have now on a long hike, about 8 to 10 days thats including food. i know i will be changing gear for my thru hike but that is 3 years away and i need a new pack now. i am slowly getting new gear but i do plan on another pack after this one before i go.

Buy a pack that feels good with everything you have to put in it.Gregory makes a durable backpack with all the bells & whistles if money isn't an option. There is nothing wrong with buying a LW pack , just remember every ounce not carried makes your thru hike all the better.

4600 ci?

You can fit that in a ULA Catalyst (http://www.ula-equipment.com/catalyst.htm). Worth every penny.

I use - http://www.jansport.com/js_product_detail.php?cid=16&pid=TLL9

Its 3 lbs 9oz ... 5000ci which is alittle optimistic but it holds all my stuff plus extra's .. for around 90 bucks .. you can't find a better pack, it rides nice up to about 40 to 42 lbs .... ideal comfort around 35 lbs ... I like mine alot.

Get all your other gear figured out and bought, then figure out how much space it takes up and buy your pack last. What kind of sleeping pad are you using? That could rule in or out some lightweight frameless style packs. You simply want the smallest pack for your biggest planned load. Lots of good companies to choose from MLD, 6 moons designs make frame less ones, that are very light.

I will second the ULA packs. Brian doesn't build the absolute lightest packs, but he builds tuff packs. He makes a great compromise between light weight and durability.

Check this thread for further testimonials. :D

REI makes some nice packs. Usually - they are less expensive than comparable packs. And they come with a lifetime warranty. Check them out online. They usually have some nice holiday sales. And if you live in a state without an REI store- there is no tax. I had my last REI pack shipped to my Mom's place in Myrtle Beach. No tax.

Get your stuff togather and go down to the Backpacker or Half Moon and ask to try out try a few out. Walk around the store fully loaded and don't forget your water bottles. As for myself, I prefer the Osprey Aether 70. It will carry all my essentials and food during the time of the year we usually section hike, late fall and it feels great. Osprey is also very customer friendly. Have a nice hike.

Go somewhere that you can try the packs on. What fits one person ,may not fit you. Sometimes there is a big difference in fit. If you plan to carry over 35 pounds get a pack with a good suspension, it's worth the extra weight for the comfort. More to how you feel carrying a pack than the wieght.

Pack should be the last thing you upgrade. Hold off until 2011.

i understand what ya'll are saying about the pack being the last thing to be upgraded. with the gear i have now i need about 4600ci. my large pack has about had it and needs to be retired thats why i need a new pack now. i will only be replacing a couple items in the next few months and what they are depends on what i can find at a good price so i'm sticking around the same size.

in 3 yrs you will probably want a different pack. stay with what u have. a yr be4 the hike start to look. there will be all sorts of new stuff by the time your ready to go but if you must get a pack the GG vapor trail is a must..its a 2lb pack with 3600 to 3900cu in depending on what one you buy..keep your weight under 30lbs with this pack and u will be fine..

I have a Mountainsmith Boundary that I'm very happy with.
It's 4575 cu.inches and weighes a little over 4 pounds.
All loaded up I find it to be very comfortable and it carries weight well.
You can read all about it HERE (http://www.mountainsmith.com/products.asp?productId=78&categoryId=8&subCategoryId=7&subCategory2Id=1)

Osprey Exos 46.

Does anybody know when the new Osprey Exos packs will be out? Are they out already, and where can you find one?
