I tried a thru in 2008 and got 700 miles. Is it too early to start a thread for us middle aged persons that are planning on hiking after retirement?

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Although, I wouldn't mind being in the class of 2025

I keep thinking:

"In the year 2525

ZEKE:

I think it's great that you're looking that far ahead.

That being said, I see that you're fifty now, which would make you 67 in the year 2025.

If at all possible, I'd try really hard to thru-hike before you're 67.

Hi Jack.. That sounds like good advice but I let 67 pass me by while I was working and am planning on SOBO next year in June. Any advice..

I might be in this class if I live to see it. 2025 is suppose to be my retirement year. I hope that I can retire before then and I pray that it doesn't move back.

Barring unexpected suddden wealth, which is, sadly, not likely, I'm in for 2118. Maybe 2117 as a southbound. Meanwhile I'll enjoy hiking in the Northwest. Any interest in a more general discusion of the needs of us older hikers?

2117...2118? That'll make you what, about 165? You might want to consider going slightly before the turn of the century while you're a bit younger.:D

Here in eastern Washington? We just go a two+ foot dump in the valleys. Nothing special in the mountains yet.

165 years old! I was only planning to live to 156. Must be one of my rare typos.:)

Model T spent quite awhile serving his country as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, so I suspect he did his share of hiking long before he turned 67. :D

Is it too early to start a thread for us middle aged persons that are planning on hiking after retirement?Just think Zeke,in 2025 they may have chair lifts up and down the steeper grades and you can tell the newby's.Gee,I remember when you had to actually climb up and down those on foot. They have already starting to put wheel chair ramps up to the privy's in Georgia.:D

Anybody know how many 60+ folks complete a thru each year? It must be at least 20 or so. Of course, this is just a SWAG?

Gotta use those veteran's burial benefits sometime. My wife won't go for taxidermy and a nice display case.

2022 is my absolute latest year, my retirement date is June 2021 and I've never wanted to SOBO. I will be 58 years old then and I would love to find a way to do it before that. If I thru hike before then I probably push retirement back to 2022 or 2023.

isnt the world supposed to end in 2012? Thats at least what the history channel keeps telling me even though I am not sure how the history channel is predicting the future. I am shooting for 2012 if there is any chance of me getting the money together. It would be nice to get done the trail... be a bum for the few months and watch the world end from atop Katahdin or springer.

Let's see, predictions for 2025 anyone?

1/ Trail will be 2240 miles long (added switchbacks)
2/ Bridge across the Kennebec
3/ Hidden cameras in every shelter and road crossing (what do they call it? CCTV?)
4/ Internet access at every point along the trail with blinking lights on your PDA (or whatever they choose to call computers by then) for all your friend's locations live.
5/ Dehydrated beer will be the craze that year.
6/ Fees for all camping (per night) Probably a standard $27.00 a night or something like that.
7/ Sleeping bags will have thermostats to dial in your comfort level
8/ Baltimore Jack will be attempting the first wheelchair hike of the trail
9/ Lone Wolf will be his support crew complete with battery change at every road crossing
10/ Wolves will be what everyone is afraid of as the bears and moose will be mild in comparison.

Love this thread. I have already calculated I retire at 55 in 2016 December so hope to be in the class of 2017 at age 55. My hope. Dehydrated beer would be nice. Shelters are nasty but I will use one in bad weather. I am not peeing in a bottle unless I have to. My hair will be white by then so forget dreads and maybe by then I will learn how to really post a photograph on the computer. And I hope there are still things such as bounce boxes, hostels, trail angels and hikers who hiked way back when for good advice and fun stories to share.
