Hi Folks,

I was planning a Batona trail hike this weekend, but it looks like I am going to have to scrap it, so I am wondering, what might be a good section to do up by the DWG this weekend, about 15 miles or so, given the snowfall predicted?

Thanks!
Chris

Also, DWG is delaware water gap. Really anywhere from the Port Clinton to NJ/NY border. I am just thinking a snow storm, plus tent camping at the DWG, plus fewer bailout options might not be the wisest move...

Bake Oven Knob Road to Little Gap. You get the view off of Bake Oven Knob to start, then you could take the blue-blaze North ?? Trail to the Outerbridge Shelter. This offers great views of the river. Then climb out of lehigh gap and traverse the barren superfund site. That must look spectacular in the snow. Total around 15 miles. Not a loop, tho.

You might try a hike from the north starting at the AMC Mohican Center and heading south to the Gap. About 11 miles to downtown. You may be able to get a shuttle from the Pack Shack folks in DWG up to Mohician. Entire hike is on top of Kittatinny Ridge. From the main high point about 3 miles from Mohican, you can see the Delaware Valley, PA and NJ, - 30 miles on a good day.

The section from Mohican south would also pass Sunfish Pond which would be pretty in the snow and is near the designated backpacking site for this section.

Thanks!

All great ideas. Here is another dumb question - how is following the trail in PA/NJ under 12 inches of snow? If it snows 10 inches tonight like it is supposed to, do you think it will see travel tomorrow morning?

I am having second thoughts about postholing all day.

There is a visitor center at Kittatiny Point. They sell very good maps of the area. DWG has many lovely trails, including some loops. I wouldn't just limit yourself to the AT in the DWG.
