With a humble Hobbit bow, I thank you. And in the words of Bilbo Baggins on the occasion of his eleventy first birthday "I am immensely fond of you all............I don't know half of you as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." :)

My adventures are only just beginning..............!

Among many lovely things, I got an REI card from my very thoughtful son :). I already have plans for that.

You mean the Winter Solstice? I've learned a whole new outlook on that. I used to hate winter - really really hate it. I'd see it as a long dark tunnel that I wouldn't be able to crawl out of until maybe April. Classic SAD case - slept too much, gained weight, wouldn't go outside, etc. Then one day I was reading about the ancient Celtic site of Newgrange in Ireland - a huge tomb with a door that is situated for the Winter Solstice sun rays. The article said the the Celts (and others who celebrated the Winter Solstice) were not celebrating the on-set of winter and hard cold weather. They were actually celebrating what the saw as the coming of Spring! To them, the months of October, November and December were "winter" - harvests were in and everything was "dead" as it got darker and darker every day. But they knew that from the 21st forward the days would start getting longer again and Spring would be coming. While the weather might still get worse they knew it would end with the coming of longer days. That changed my whole outlook forever. :sun Now I also see it as the "start" of Spring, not the onset of Winter. That has made all the difference.

I think it's an interesting day as it marks a specific point of the earth's cycle (give or take the variation as sometimes it's not the 21st.) Plus all the other cultural stuff:sun.
