View Full Version : Extra water for Camp
Hi just found out i am geting two Nalgene Cantene for Xmas one is a 32oz. and the other is a 48oz. I also have a Nalgene 32oz. bottle and a Msr Dromlite Bag 2 Liter. Do you think
the Nalgene Cantene 48oz would be good for camp i plan on carry the 32 bottle and the 32oz cantene when walking or should i bring the Mrs bag for camp use. Thank
Myself, I used a 1 liter HDPE Nalgene and carried a 96 oz collapsible Nalgene canteern that I used for camp. I'd fill them both up before dinner and that was enough to get me started the next morning without an additional trip to the water source.
I've had both the 48 oz. Nalgene Cantene and the Dromlite. I think the Dromlite is probably more durable. The Cantene started leaking at the base of the neck due to folding when empty. The Dromlite's neck is flush with the side of the bag so there's no folding when empty. I got two years of section hikes out of the Cantene before it gave out. I also took it to work almost every day on my bike, so it might last nearly forever with less use. Time will tell with the Dromlite.
For me, a 3 liter water bag works well. I fill it up when I get to the shelter, and It will last me all night and fill up my water bottle in the morning. For water bottle, I use a 16 or 32oz Gatorade bottle. Lot's liter than a Nalgene.

For 2 of us we brought a Nalgene canteen and like it very much. But for me, I just used my playtpus 3 liter and an aqua fina bottle to mix drinks in.
I love my nalgene canteens. They stand upright when full. The dromlite lying flat seems more susceptible to puncture and leaking. I have used my canteens for several hikes with no problems. Carrying them empty and using them in camp is my method.

Personally, I almost never used more than two liters (64 oz) for dinner, washing, and breakfast/coffee. Most of the time I'd get by with one liter, or a bit more. But I don't have a great "thirst" in me; I drink less water than many people, it seems. So you just have to ask yourself what kind of thirst you have, generally speaking, and plan for that. You can always adjust to conditions on the trail; if you have extra, cool. If you don't think you'll have enough, make sure to drink a bunch of water at your final water source for the day ("camel up") and you'll be ok.

Exactly as TrippinBTM says. But I hiked in a wet year ('08) and it seemed that the next water was seldom more than a few miles away. I never carried more than two liters, ever, even in a dry camp situation.

I sweat a ton when I hike and have a great thirst. When I make camp I usually need several liters to get me through to the morning. This includes leaving camp with at least 2 liters unless I'll be travelling through a wet area, then I leave camp with less. I also hate making multiple trips to the water source once in camp. Because of this, I use a platy bag...think it's a 6 liter Big Zip? Works for me. Merry Christmas.

The MSR bag is collapsible and you will not need it every night when the water source is close by. The canteens take up room.

Collapsed they take no more space than the MSR bag.

We liked the nylon water bag too. Very light, easy to find a place to hang it and holds plenty of water for cooking, cleaning up, rinsing clothes, and filtering for the next day's hike. It's easy to fill and with one trip to the source everything else can be done in the comfort of camp.
I hike with a 4 liter dromlite, which is not always full and a 1 liter nalgene which attaches to my water filter. So I can have a max of 5 liters.
If I were you I would keep the 2 liter dromlite because as you use up the water it takes less space in your pack and because you can use a hydration hose with it and can drink without stopping.
