View Full Version : Jacket
Hi i got down to two jackets for camp the first is a goosedown with no hood
the second is a primaloft with a hood the nice thing abount the primaloft is if it
get wet it will still keep you warm. What do you guy think what jacket would you take. Oh yet the goosedown is 650 down Thank
well you should have a lightweight rain jacket anyway, so you could take the down and wear the rainjacket over it in camp. keeps it dry plus blocks the wind. i just don't like hoods though, kinda weird about things that make me feel like i'm wearing blinders. usually just take an fleece earwarmer band thingie.
I have a down sleeping bag so I carry a synthetic jacket. Don't want to put all my eggs in one basket.

Excellent advice.
Goose down very warm and you can take a wool hat. You can control you body temp with a hat you can take it on and off. You can always wear a hat without the jacket if It's a little to warm for your jacket. If you have a hood on your jacket you would have to put on the jacket to keep your body temp controled. If its warm you will probably burn up. Plus the goose down will pack up small.

I like my hood in the winter, but it starts to become extra weight as you move away from the coldest months. Deep winter I have a hat and a balaclava as backup, so something is a little extra. Then I start leaving the balaclava at home, then the hooded jacket gets switched to a vest. If the hood detaches, you might want to leave it home at some point, but I never really care to lose those few extra ounces. Hoods are nice as well for breaks, when you toss on your jacket. I hike in shorts a lot as I hike warm, so stopping can lead to heavy heat loss.
A hood is warmer in camp for me than a hat, but I need a hat to hike in for regulating temperature, so the hat might get wet. Balaclavas are very worthwhile, but I hate sleeping in them, but keep one as a backup as I said above in winter.
If the hood is detachable, then you can figure it out by trial and error.
And space is also a consideration.

Everything else being equal, I'd take the hooded jacket for camp. The hood will keep both your head AND the back of your neck warmer than just a watch cap alone.
For my money, you can't keep your head and neck too warm in camp. YMMV.

I brought dwon without a hood as it compacts nicely. A rain jacket over it works fine in inclement weather.
For me it's synthetic insulation in clothing except in the dead of winter when liquid precipitation is not as likely, then I'll bring a puffy down jacket.
I have a removable synthetic hood from an ages old REI jacket with a very light shell. I use it on all my jackets, synth. or otherwise. It's warmer when I sleep in my hoodless sleeping bags, especially when I use my hammock in temps. below freezing. I can wear it with just my long underwear in my sleeping bag since it's removable. I also carry a very light balaclava for hiking, fall through spring.
