I am leading a 3 day shuttle hike on the AT NOBO including the Dragon's Tooth, McAffe Knob and Tinker Cliffs AKA the VA Triple Crown. I have the official map of the section but I believe the guide book is being revised. The distance from the start point on VA Rt311 to Catawba Mt shelter is around 13 miles. We'll use the Dragon's Tooth Tr to hook up with the AT. I'd like to make it to that shelter but understand that the trail is pretty rugged and we'll be getting a late start. Does anyone know of any campsites on water that would be more like 8-10 miles in case we run out of daylight? There will be about 10 in the group so the site would have to be pretty big. Thanks for any suggestions.
