I'd like to get a watch with a compass for my thru - but it's pretty ridiculous to buy new. So if you've got a watch you're no longer using, I'd like to buy it. Where possible, I'd like to see a picture of it.

If you have a watch, you might be able to use one of these:

I wouldn't bother with the thermometer. Body heat throws them off.

Thanks, Tinker! That's a great idea. I'm still hoping to get an all-in-one watch/compass but this is the perfect plan B.

I have had a couple of Timex Compass watches and they get beat up pretty quickly. Unless you are looking for a really expensive watch, Maybe a $30 new Timex will work for you. They rarely last more than a year with me, so it might be more than adequate for 9 months - I also found I rarely used the compass function.

Does anyone know if anyone still makes a reasonably priced wind up pocket watch?
It wouldn't have to be all that accurate, or light weight. I just think they are marvelous.

I also like the ticking. I have a battery powered watch that ticks, and I like it at night, but its not quite the same as a mechanical watch would be. When it does get too loud but I can bury it a little. Mechanical compasses are nice also. I have an old aluminum one in a leather case, or at least I think its aluminum. Those sorts of things are nice when you hike solo, and seem to increase in personal value over time more than electronic stuff. They don't have to be expensive, but it does help if you don't lose them. :)

I can't stand ticking watches at night. The other night I left it at my parents and as I laid in bed I swear I heard it ticking. I got up and went looking for it to stuff it under something to shut it up. Was no where to be found and I realized that I had forgotten it at my parents over Christmas. Does that remind you of the Tell tale heart? I about lost my religion huntin for that thing!

i just bought some sort of timex adventure watch, can't think of the exact name of it off amazon. Only 43 dollars has 3 alarms, stop watch, count down ect. Plus a compass. Lots of great features, we'll see if it's durable soon enough i guess.
