Start with The Walmart Blue foam and see if you can sleep on it. If you can than anything will work. I carry the Thermarest Prolite 4 so I can sleep well even when not Hanging.

I Wanted To Let You Know That It Is A Great Choice. I Have A Prolite 4 And Also Have The Foam Form Of The Prolite Series. I Took The Foam Version On My Trip Through The Smokies In October 2008 And I Enjoyed It, But It Is A Thinner Material And It Was Alot Harder. I Wish I Would Have Brought My Prolite 4 Becasue Of The Thickness And The Way It Feels. I Have The Medium, But I Wish I Woould Have Bought The Large Because It Is 5 Inches Wider. The Way It Rolls Up It Alot Nicer. I Wouldn't Take My Foam One Again Because You Have To Strap It To Your Pack Outside. My Prolite 4 Is So Small That It Will Fit In My Bag Next To My Tent And Sleeping Bag. Thermarest Has Some New Models This Year And I Don't See Really Any Difference Except Their Thermarest Pr It Is Lime But The Air Baffles Are Different. I Love High Tech Equipent I Will Probably Have One Sent To Me When I Hit Hot Springs North Carolina. I Want You To Know That Don't Buy A Cheap Pad. They Don't Last. The A.t. Is Not A Place To Cheat Yourself. This Is Where Your Going To Live For Months. The Ground And Shelters Do Get Hard. Actually Real Hard And Cold.

FYI, Therm-a-rest is coming out with a new version of the prolite, that uses a lighter more compactable foam, which means stores might eventually put the current prolite 3 and 4 on sale.

Not sure i ever seen anyone type using a capital letter for each word ... that was rough to try an read ... =]

But yeah, i also use a tr4 and wouldn't leave home without it .. 6'4 235 lbs and with alittle bit of air pushed out once fully inflated i can sleep on my sides without having my hips pushing into the earth ... Best money you can spend is on your sleeping gear ... without sleep, hiking isn't much fun.

I have a prolite 4 regular i bought online used, for $60. I will sell it for that shipped. It is too big for my pack. I only used it once. Included, a homemade orange stuff sack.

...I don't know why it happens, but I know it happens when you have the Caps lock on. Some quirk/option in the software reduces it like that.

The Prolite 4 is a great pad and leave it to Thermarest to deep-six a great $99 product and introduce the Prolite Plus at $150. It might be warmer that the P4(3.8 R-value) and lighter(2.1 lbs for large 25x77), but it's still a 1.5 inch thick pad like the P4. There are thousands of Prolites out there though I don't think I'd ever buy a used inflatable pad. Finicky about possible leaks . . .

Tipi,

The pricing for the new prolite plus series are $85, (short) $95 (regular) and $110 (large). This is identical to last year's prolite 4 series. Also, the weights and dimensions have stayed exactly the same. It appears that the only things that have changed are the r values (3.2 to 3.8) and the color. That is a pretty neat trick if you ask me, and I will probably be getting one of these for winter use. I was just about to buy a prolite 4 actually, and I'm glad I waited.

You are probably thinking of the $150 Neoair (http://thegearjunkie.com/the-gear-junkie-scoop-therm-a-rest-neoair), which is a whole different animal completely. The neoair also happens to be the pad I would personally buy if I were about to start a thruhike. 14 ounces for the regular size, r value of 2.5 and 2.5 inches high. I love progress!! :banana

I've had two Prolite 3's and both have gotten leaks within weeks. Back to a Z-rest/Z-lite.

Both times were in the desert, but I always used a tyvek ground cloth and was especially careful with the replacement. Bad luck I guess.

Just a thorny situation between a rock and a hard place.
