I was just wondering what past thru-hikers have used to pack out trash. Do you use a stuff sack? A large zip-lock? (how often did you have to replace it?) A Plastic Bag?

Thanks.

I use a ziplock bag that had previously been used to store food and if there is anything with juices like tuna packets it does not get reused.

I do all my cooking in freezer bags so I carry a one gallon freezer bag and put my trash in it. Get off the trail its nice a neat to dump out. Nothing leaking into my pack or onto my clothes.

Not a thru-hiker, but it's ziplocs for me. I take a gallon size with me for hikes more that 2 nights. I can easily fit a week's worth of trash in a gallon ziploc. I also tend to Freezer Bag Cook, so I usually have a quart size ziploc trashbag after my first night's dinner.

I usually use a small ziplock that held granola. When it fills up, I just use another one, and dispose of it/them whenever the opportunity arises,

My food was double bagged in the plastic shopping bags. So I used them.

Now that is interesting, but I like to tie my trash bag outside my pack (for sanitary reasons). Not sure how to do that with this. ? You'd have to squash it inside your pack?

I started a routine on the PCT. I would carry a can of Pringles out of every town and proceed to eat the entire can of chips on day 1 (along with other snacks).

Then for the rest of the leg the can acts as a trash recepticle with a lid. Anything smelly like tuna packets go in a ziplock.

I place all my daily trash into my nightly Lipton's envelope and those into a large ziploc.

That is a great idea. Though I would use a mixed nuts can instead for the wet stuff. I normally put all the dry stuff in brown paper sandwich bags that I can burn after using in camp and the wet in a larger ziploc.

I also do this. . . and find myself doing the same routine at home long after I've gotten off the trail.
