View Full Version : REI Quarter Dome 1 or Similar
I would love to find an REI Quarter Dome 1 (or similar) used tent for my 10 year old son who wants to carry his own tent on the AT when we do our section hike and also when he goes backpacking with the Scouts - I already have a QD2 and love it so I'm looking for something similar in the 1-man variety. Thanks.

The Qdome 1 is a great tent, but a bit pricey. If you aren't opposed to a non-freestanding tent, you may want to check out the Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1. It was recently on sale at REI...you could perhaps find it cheaper online. It's pretty light, nice and roomy and has a decent vestibule for a 1 man tent.
I think I need a freestanding tent so my son who is 10 can pitch it by himself with little worry that it will fail and come crashing down on him in wind or storm...

Walmart Ozark Trail Children's tent. So easy, a five year old can pitch it in the pitch dark and free standing to boot. It won't come crashing down. I've used it in a tropical storm. (Consequently, my tent didn't leak/flood either and some folks $$ brands did.)
Weighted it with everything included (stuff sacks, rubber bands, instruction booklet, and cardboard inserts) and it is 2.5 lbs. Less if you actually open your new tent and remove the packaging. But the post office was on the way home from Walmart and I've never thought to reweigh.
An adult can fit diagonally in it (unless you are over 8 ft tall) but would have a hard time sitting up. A child can fit whichever way they choose and would not have a hard time sitting up.
At 5'2", when I sit up I barely brush the top of the tent.
Oh, and the price: $18.
Doesn't need a footprint because it is only $18 and the footprint would cost more in terms of labor (assuming you get paid minimum wage for the hours you put in) than just buying a new tent.
