I know you are supposed to be fitted and try on a pack before you purchase it, however this appears to be a great deal on the rei super clearance and my girlfriend needs a pack. We are pretty much weekend 2 night hikers at the moment with no immediate intention to make it further. She used my old external frame pack from 15 years ago last time we went hiking and it just didn't work. So any suggestions or comments on this pack advertised on rei http://www.rei.com/product/733280

Go for it, if you're a member, and it dosen't you can take it back for a full refund (even on a super sale item)

It's a fairly big pack for just weekend trips, but if she fits that torso size, they try it. But you need to at least measure for the torso.
REI will take it back even if it has been in the woods, go for it . Its the right price.
Looks like a heck of a deal,I would dive on it. MANY people will tell you its too big,but its not like you have to fill it to the max, just carry what ya need.

I guess I can always order it, have it shipped to the store, and have her try it on at the store before we leave.

Is there any way you can GO TO an Rei? I know here they have 'garage sales" every 3 months. Basically open package and returned items at dirt cheap prices. My friend found a dirty Osprey womens pack in size Smal(she has a 16" torso and was sure it'd be too big) for 40 dollars. There is NOTHING that we can find wrong with it. It's just dirty. Who cares. Inside it looks new. Shes tickled pink. Its an Aura 65. It fits like a dream! There should be a guide to torso measuring on the rei website and the pack should have a "specs" area telling what the med fits. it's a GREAT DEAL, but if it's too small...eep...it could be a great pain. I have been measured 3 times, once at 16, once at 16.5, and once at 17. lol I just consider my range 17 and UNDER. I actually have a size Small pack (Osprey Ariel 55) but was suppose to have an XS. The shoulder harness adjusts on my pack...so I moved it down a little and it is heaven.
Ultimately it's your call. Just sharing my experiences with pack fitting and Rei sales! :)

Order the quick 45 as well. Great price on that pack, but it could be a little small for her, depending on how bulky her gear is. The pack you are considering is a little big and a bit heavy.

Yes, it's big, but just leave the top pocket at home if it will detach. That is what I do with my Gregory Reality. Saves weight and straps.
As far as size, to me a weekend pack is the same size as a backpacking pack. The only difference might be a few day's of food. Otherwise, all the gear is the same.

I'm with both of you. I have the original UL 45 and it's a great pack. Have used it on a thru of the GSMNP. Big enough if you add some bottom straps.

.I have the original UL 45 as well and it is a good pack. I don't think it is big enough for a noob with noob gear.

.I got all my summer stuff into the one I had, my Megalite, my full length prolite 4, and a synthetic quilt. I did have the large though (an extra 300 ci). Like you say, some straps or some other way to put a sleeping pad on the outside definitely would free up the interior. Then whether or not her sleeping bag is a big synthetic one or not. Greg can be chivalrous and carry the shelter:D.

When he orders the pack, he can order her a closeout REI sleeping bag that packs down well.

It has been a week or so since I wrote this thread and now REI has a whole different list of packs on there. Just wanted to see what some opinions of the packs listed on this page are. I am looking for a pack for myself and one for my girlfriend to be used mainly for weekend hikes of 2-3 nights.

I have three friends that have the Golite Quest and they love them. They have a large capacity and handle well (so I'm told). I've also heard great things about Osprey but have never tried them. Anything around 55 L to 60 L will be good for weekend trips. And act soon and you can get an additional 20% off the price of outlet gear. (make sure you've measured your torso lengths before you buy). Men can have a much shorter torso than they think; I know I did.

REI has introduced their new Flash packs. This year they have both a 50 and a 65 for women (last year they had the women's 45 but not a larger pack.)
My daughter has the 45-liter version. She found it to be too small for her, even though she has a very light down bag, and otherwise travels light-to-ultralight. Just no room for food or warm clothing. We're going to trade up to the new 65 liter pack.
The women's small is 2 lbs 14 ounces.
