Its a Military Surplus issue. I have one of these (i've had 3 altogether, I've sold off two of them) They're made specifically for the US-Military BY thermarest (so you can use their repair kits and valves.) Maybe it's mental, but I also think they're thicker and more resistant to wear and tear, the one I still have has been used consistently for 3 years.
I actually roll mine up incorrectly, by folding it in half along the long way then rolling it. On the regular thermarests, this is a good way to ruin it. On this mil-spec one, i've been storing it like that... no leaks so far. and for $20, who cares?
