I'm in MA myself and hike, backpack and snowshoe a lot in the winter. I prefer a tank with a built in bra during the colder months as it keeps my lower back and belly warmer than a crop/sports bra.

I forgot to add it would depend a lot on your cold tolerance. I would rather hike in my tank part of the day when it warms up...verses having my lower back chill.

Depends if you like the feel of the tank under, say, a long sleeve merino wool shirt if its cold and windy hiking. It's up to you, really, with comfort level. If you like to double up, take it and save $$.

It also depends on the size of your chest. I have never been comfortable wearing a tank with a built in bra since I didn't have enough support. For my thru I wore a sports bra along with a wool t-shirt (lightweight) and wool long sleeve (midweight). I also carried a fleece. All of these gave a lot of different layering options.
