Have you used Tuf-Foot (http://www.tuffoot.com/about/humans.htm)? This is what it says on the website about it:

TUF-FOOT conditions the foot by toughening the tissues and it also aids in protecting feet against bruises, blisters and soreness.
Recommended by veterinarians and trainers for 70 years, TUF-FOOT is guaranteed to toughen and protect soft, sore and tender paws. Both sporting hunters and big game hunters highly recommend TUF-FOOT to keep both their dogs and their own feet in top condition. TUF-FOOT extends its healing and protective properties to horses aiding in hoof care. In addition, it toughens the soles of human feet.

I bought a bottle to use on my dog's paws before our 09 thru. Now I'm thinking I could use it on my feet to toughen them up after going soft over the winter.

I'd like to hear if other's have used it - did it work? Have any problems?

I like to know what's in stuff, and then use natural materials and remedies if I can. It mentions balsam. I've heard alcohol works also by drying the skin out, but I think something with balsam and stuff in it might be better. I had really sore blistered feet once and found walking a mile on a section of pine or spruce needles that really helped alot. I thought it was just the soft drying massaging action, but come to think if it it was all the sticky stuff also. So I can see how the balsam might work. Curious what else is in it. Might be good when working with a hatchet and stuff also, when you haven't yet had time to build up caluses where you need them. Peeing on blisters supposed to be a remedy also. I've done that sailing. Balsam sounds better maybe. lol

Alot of it is foot care also, what socks your wear under what conditions, and how often you take your socks off and let your feet air dry. I wouldn't recommend hiking barefoot, but a little now and then and especially at home and around camp is a really good thing.

Thanks for the post. I will try going barefoot under evergreen trees more often.

Might be prudent to buy the human version.

I have the human version. If I remember correctly, It has some kind of benzoin in it, which is often recommended for treating blister and toughening skin. It also has rubbing alcohol in it, you can definitely smell it when you put it on.

Seems to work pretty well, I'm not very good at applying it daily, I tend to forget, but I'm hoping it will help toughen em for my thru-hike.

Another wonder-treatment is Hydropel. It lubes em up to prevent blisters, it's not super greasy like vaseline though. A little pricey.
