View Full Version : section maps or guide books?
Hey everybody, I got a question about section maps or guide books for a section I will be hiking in May. The section being Dicks creek to Franklin so the question is this being 2 different states should I just get the Georgia and North carolina maps or should I get the guide books also? and on a side note is the trial blazed well in this area? thanks

The maps from Amicalola SP to the Southern edge of GSMNP (Great Smoky Mountain National Park) are sold in a set (2 maps). You can also buy a package containing the 2 maps and guide book for that area (for like 30 bucks). Go check it out on one of the big outdoor store websites (like REI) or the ATC website.
As for how well the trail is marked, my guess is you would have to try fairly hard to lose the trail in that area. It is not only well marked, but the foliage is so thick that you're gonna want to stay on it.
You seem a little green around the gills (which I don't mean in a derogatory way) based on your "how many miles a day" thread, so I would recommend getting at least the maps and studying them carefully. That will probably answer a lot of your questions.

Maps are always good to have.

Ok, before anyone else catches it I used the wrong idiom here. I meant to say that the OP seems a little inexperienced...not about to throw up.

We were all inexperienced once. And in many ways, still are ( I know I am on stuff, for sure)...:)
Being here asking questions is the way to get some knowledge. For me, maps also are a hiker's best friend along with a hiker's firsthand knowledge of an area. But sometimes you never really know until you are out there for yourself.
I see the maps you speak of (gsmnp to springer) and it says there are maps (topo's, elevations, etc.) and the "guide book". Any idea what this is of the information is in the guide book?

The guidebook is a thorough description of the trail, not to be confused with the Handbook, AT pages or Companion which are also commonly referred to as guidebooks but with more town info. If you're doing a section, they work fine.
