Thanks to anyone who wrote Congress and the Senate to support this purchase.

The preservation of the Rocky Fork Tract in Eastern Tennessee (abutting the AT) was a priority for the ATC.

The US Forest Service purchased 2,237 acres for $8.4 million, and the Conservations Fund purchased the remaining 7,387 acres for $31.6 million).

The State of Tennessee will eventually buy this land from the Conservation Fund.

The sale was led by Republican Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, and former US Representative David Davis (R).

Good deal but do I detect a little political bias from the OP?

No bias other to inform. I thought it was unusual that the sponsors were of that political stripe...

As for me? I'm fiercely Independent, and registered Unaffiliated in NC.

Morgan Sommerville, regional director of the ATC has been working on this for about 20 years. he was a BIG reason this finally happened.

Excellent news and extremely beneficial for the conservation of an area that is becoming increasingly decimated by land developers. Also home to the first trout stream I fished when moving here in 1981, which had been also subject to logging and nearby development.

Do people read anymore? I'm registered Unaffiliated.

That's even more independent than being Independent!

I declared my independence from Independents after being burned by Ross Perot (Independent candidate for President in 1992).

Back to the Original Topic: It seems like the efforts to preserve natural lands has really quickened here in NC. Since 2005, over 12,000 acres have been preserved in State Parks and Natural areas.

Good to see the work of non-profits such as the Conservation Fund and Nature Conservancy doing such good. (No I don't work for either.)
