View Full Version : The Thru-Hiker's Handbook question
I have the 2006 edition. Are there any notable differences or additions to the trail between Franklin and Fontana in the newest editions? Basically, I'm asking if I should buy a new book this year or wait.
Thanks,
Bigben

Ron Haven will be running a hiker hostel in Franklin this year, in addition to operating two very hiker-friendly hiker motels. And there might be a few changes in the Nantahala Outdoor Center in terms of facilities and options for guests. And the current Handbook contains updated information on services at US19 and Bryson City. Likewise, there are a few changes in the Fontana Village area in re. to facilities, re-supply, etc. But as for the actual Trail itself between Franklin and Fontana, other than a new hostel near Stecoah Gap, there have been few changes. In most cases, I suggest people use the most current Trail book they can get; in your case, your older edition will likely be just fine.
Thanks Jack. I'm more interested in the actual trail, i.e. reroutes, water, etc. What's the hostel at Stecoah Gap called and what's their #? I like to write that stuff down in case I need to bail I have someone close to call. We're most probably parking at The Hike Inn, having them shuttle us to Winding Stair Gap and then staying at the Hike Inn before driving home the next day.
How's the cell service at Fontana? I have Verizon.

The new facility in Stecoah Gap is called the Appalachian Inn. It looks to be a rather nice B&B, tho it seems pricey ($125.00 includes breakfast). For shuttles or emergencies, tho, you might want to keep them in mind; try 828-479-8450
Also near there is The Cabin in the Woods, which costs 30pp. Call Phil at 828-735-3368 for details.
