Hey ladies...Have any of you ever done about 19 miles a day? How many hours did it take?
I am brainstorming on a fundraising idea.
A Rail Trail which is about 19 miles long and mostly flat, I am thinking of getting pledges and if I don't complete it in so many hours they don't owe anything. I have already done 11 miles in 5 hours and that was a rough trail with lots of inclines....so I was thinking of a 10 hour time limit for myself to allow for resting and eating. Any thoughts?
You should be able to hike 2.0 mph fairly easily, so 9.5 hours.
You should be able to get it done in 6.5 hrs if you get after it.

What are you going to carry? Daypack? Backpack? How much water,food/snack? Footwear? With this added info we may be able to narrow it down for you...

2 miles an hour is a safe bet if flat and carrying minimal gear. I did easy 2 1/2 miles an hour on flat trail on my hike carrying a loaded backpack, but I was in thru hiker shape too. About 2 mph on regular mtn trail like VA. :)
I did 20 miles last Saturday, not flat, not hurrying, loafing around and resting at will. Took 10 hours. Flat, trying to push it, you should be able to make 3 mph.
My recipe for this sort of activity: Have plenty of fluids (I like Cytomax, about a liter every two hours), with sugary snacks every hour, and some nuts and not-sweet stuff (pecans, peanut butter) to stick to your ribs.

Thanks for the information... I am planning on just a day pack with fluids, snacks and the day hike basics. Probably be using my hiking boots since they have treated me well even on a Rocky Mountain hike, and on the weekly training hikes with the LLS.

Why tie yourself down to a time? I'd probably just say 19 miles in a day and leave it at that. For all you know it may be 100 degrees in June, you've got a cold and feel lousy, and at the 5 mile mark you slightly sprain your ankle.
To most people, hiking, walking, whatever 19 miles in a day seems like an impossible task.
Good luck.
