View Full Version : Put dog feces in moldering/composting privy?

I'm good with the concept of burying or packing out my dog's feces while backpacking (not any different than day hiking in that regard).

But I was thinking about the areas around shelters/campsites with privies- more specifically the moldering/composting type. Is it okay to drop dog feces into these?

I can't see any problem with it, assuming you don't mind marching around the property with it. Sometimes privies are a good distance away.

A decent burial seems to me a whole lot easier.

In any case, glad you're on top of this. Most dog owners, quite frankly, don't give a s***.

Just sling it out through the woods away from any path or water source.......

They give plenty of s*** and that's the problem :-?

Don't bother, just don't let him crap on the AT. Why does all the wildlife out there crap on the AT? I think this was a turkey, but it kind of looks like it came out of a very LARGE Canadian Goose.

I am a firm believer in burying my dog's waste- and if the ground is frozen/ledge I'll at least cover it completely with leaf litter. FWIW I don't let my dogs poop "on" any of our hiking trails. It's easy enough to tell when they need to go and move off into the surrounding woods. I despise people that leave huge piles of dung on or near the walkway. And it's idiots like that that make it so hard for responsible pet owners.

I was just wondering about the dog feces in the privy idea as a way to (in some small manner) lessen my impact around the already stressed ecosystems near shelters.

MY, MY, MY...it must be a REALLY SLOW news-day today if we're reporting on dog poop....

Okay, I'll throw in my $0.02 worth, since I operate two composters in Pa. As nearly as I've ever been able to determine, POOP IS POOP! So, if you want to go to the trouble of scooping it up and parading...I mean, transporting...it to the privy, then by all means, go ahead.

Just PLEASE refrain from tossing any plastic, glass, rocks, or "sanitary" items down the hole, since these do not compost, and will have to be fished out by a very angry composter-operator (who might be inclined to curse you with explosive diarrhea and a forgotten roll of TP on your next backpack trip:eek:).

Put it in. I think it helps. Also a good example to other pet owners.
