Hello. I have an Osprey pack. The outfiiter that I got it from, and went back to for a refitting, is certain that my hip belt is going to rub my belly button ring raw on my thruhike. Well, I've never had an issue with it rubbing before on my old pack, or this pack. Although, I've never thruhiked- the longest I've been out is about a week. He said I'll either end up wearing my hip belt lower on my waist, or take out the belly button ring altogether.
Well, it seems pretty unlikely to me that he has his belly button pierced, but who am I to assume? So, ladies with belly button piercings, do you have issues with it rubbing? My hip buckle falls over the piercing, but I dont even feel it. If it helps, I have one of the rings with the tension-held ball in the middle- where you have to kinda pop it out. I can turn it down so the ball is pretty much in my belly button, no rubbing, the rings just lays sideways against my skin. Any pierced thruhikers?

That has bothered my other piercings for sure so I just don't use it.
had a bellybutton piercing since i was 16. never had it rub. never had the belt catch on it. nothing. hell, i never even remember it's there, really. i guess on somebody with a really short torso it might come into play, but frankly i think it's a non-issue.
the only thing that ever happens is eventually my shorts waist rides up under my belt and that catches on my bar. but that happens sometimes anyway.

Thanks alot...I'm cleaning chunks out of my keyboard....

both. however, i was reefering to the bellybutton piercing. i don't have a ring, i have a barbell, which should, in theory, catch on things more often than the ring.

So the bear gets thirsty, goes to the bar and gets hung up on your barbell?
no, the bar gets thirsty, goes to the bar and gets hung up on the bar.

Cool. Glad we got that worked out; was afraid a bar might be going thirsty somewhere.

thank you, Ladies.
Now if the outfitter only knew about the other piercing... and it's not in the sternum strap region.

I had my left nipple pierced for years...a hoop. My chest strap and shoulder straps never bothered it however...I had my collapsed hiking poles strapped along the side of the pack with the tips upward once while I was in town. I swung the pack up to put it on and the tip of one of the hiking poles just happened to go through the center of the hoop (with a T shirt on)and ripped it out...sounds bad but it was actually far more painful getting the piercing than having it pulled out. Didn't get it re-pierced...just thought that I'd mention it due to the fact that piercing can be affected in multiple unthought of ways while out there.
You know those thin tin spoon, fork, knife dinner sets that all hook together with holes over the pins in the spoon?.......did I ever tell ya about the time the knife handle was stuck on my tongue ring?:) 35 minutes!
Be care, it can be a jungle out there!

I would think if you've not had problems with it on a week long trip, then you're probably going to be OK. Just keep an eye on it.

Forgive me for being a moron.
I have a barbell style belly-button ring, never had a problem out of it on my thru-hike. I think the only time you would even have to think about it is keeping it clean if you haven't had it pierced for long.

I'd put a dab of antibiotic cream on it every so often from your first aid kit. And just be careful.

switch to titanium jewelry, its lighter
I wear a ring, but I also wear my pack very low, several inches below my belly button, so it the pack and ring have little chance of affecting each other.
The only time I have ever had an issue was on a celebration day, when we reached the end of the Florida Trail at the Alabama line. My hiking partner and I have this tradition of dressing up for such occasions. My dress up outfit was a very unsuitable for backpacking red dress. The front is held together by a series of metal rings about 1 1/2' in diameter. I had never noticed an issue when wearing the dress without a pack, but when worn with a pack I have had a couple of occasions when the belly ring and the dress ring would come into conflict. After realizing the possible implication of ripping the ring out by accident, I have switched to an alternate, but equally unsuitable black dress, but which doesn' have rings.

On a more serious note, I agree with the posters who said if you haven't had a problem on a week long hike you probably won't on a longer hike. If you do notice it catching or rubbing, a piece of moleskin over the top should solve the problem. Don't forget to keep it clean.
