I have been flirting with the idea for a while now to do a thru hike on the AT. Recent changes in life promted me to do it now (planning to leave 3.31.09). I have some knowledge of synthetic fiber clothing and staying dry, but dont know much else as far as what I will need. I know the basic things like tent, sleeping gear...ect. But if anyone has sugestions of other things to carry, I am open.

Just an FYI, with the (debatable) exception of some things like carrying weights, miles per day, speeds, strengths, safety and feminine hygiene, backpacking isn't all that different for women so you're welcome to introduce these topics in the general section.

And try an overnight practice hike or two. Nothing like the real thing when it comes to education.
